Kathy Hochul announces Transgender Awareness Month after winning tight election

Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) proclaimed November to be Transgender Awareness Month in one of her first moves following reelection. The governor faced a tough challenge from Republican competitor Lee Zeldin but ultimately prevailed.
On Wednesday, Hochul’s office issued the proclamation “to celebrate the trans community in New York State and across the country.”
“This November, I’m proud to celebrate Transgender Awareness Month to highlight the countless contributions that members of the transgender community have made to our state,” she said in a press release.

“Along with Transgender Day of Remembrance, this is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the discrimination and attacks transgender, gender non-conforming and non-binary people face across the world. My administration will continue to stand with the transgender community as we fight to ensure all New Yorkers can live with the dignity and equality they deserve,” she added.
The state will participate in Transgender Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20 alongside progressive nonprofit organizations. Per the governor, several landmarks in New York will be lit in the colors of the transgender flag: pink, white, and blue.
The landmarks that will be lit include One World Trade Center, Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, Kosciuszko Bridge, H. Carl McCall SUNY Building, State Education Building, Alfred E. Smith State Office Building, Empire State Plaza, State Fairgrounds — Main Gate & Expo Center, Niagara Falls, Franklin D. Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge, Grand Central Terminal — Pershing Square Viaduct, Albany International Airport Gateway, MTA LIRR — East End Gateway at Penn Station, and Fairport Lift Bridge over the Erie Canal.
