Former President Donald Trumps reelection campaigners were reportedly ecstatic about how CNN’s town hall turned out last night.

They should be. “Advisers to Trump are thrilled at how this is going so far for him,” Jonathan Swan wrote. “They can’t believe he is getting an hour on CNN with an audience that cheers his every line and laughs at his every joke.”

LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD FOR INDEPENDENT MEDIA

It is somewhat unbelievable that CNN would provide Trump with a free hourlong infomercial for his presidential campaign, until you remember that is exactly what the network did in 2016 as well.

The reality is that last night’s town hall will probably be the most watched hour of television on CNN so far this year. CNN is so desperate for ratings they are perfectly willing to invite Trump on to spew lies for an hour straight. Who cares about truth, fairness, or journalism when there are bills to pay?

Perhaps CNN’s leadership thought town hall host Kaitlan Collins could somehow contain Trump’s act. But with the audience CNN selected for the event, all Republicans, CNN set Collins up to be the perfect Trump foil. Collins came at Trump with attacks from the Left all night long, save for one question on abortion, and the crowd clearly shared Trump’s point of view on every issue.

This is the same network that ran a chyron reading “Fiery But Mostly Peaceful Protests” during the George Floyd riots. This is the same network that spread the Black Lives Matter lie that Michael Brown peacefully raised his hands and said “Don’t shoot.” This is the same network whose White House correspondent read a poem in the briefing room like it was binding legal precedent.

CNN has zero credibility with Republicans, and they have very much earned exactly that much. To stuff an auditorium full of people who already detest CNN and then expect Collins to somehow win them over with schoolmarm admonitions about Trump’s behavior was naive at best.

Hopefully CNN and the other networks will learn their lesson after last night: no more free advertising for the Trump campaign.

Unfortunately, the liberals that run these networks both want Trump to be the nominee and very much need the ratings he brings to their networks. So we are probably doomed to see repeat performances of last night.
