Legalizing recreational marijuana has had many deleterious effects on society, from the awful smell that hangs in the air everywhere to the increase in marijuana-related DUI accidents.
Now, you can also add Fido being rushed to the veterinarian as yet another victim of Mary Jane.

In cities such as New York, there has been an increase in the number of dogs needing veterinarian care for marijuana poisoning. What was once a rare occurrence limited to pets that found their owners’ stashes has spread to dogs simply going on walks around the city as they end up eating discarded joints and edibles.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said there was a 3,000% increase in such cases over the last five years. The increase in cases has led to more dogs needing to have their stomachs pumped. It’s an expensive problem for a dog owner to have, and it is all the result of littering. Who could have possibly guessed that stoners would be too lazy to find a trash can?
Now it is dogs that are paying the price for people who can’t walk around town without being high. Perhaps that will be the sign that the hubris of man and cannabis has gone too far. How many more poisoned dogs will it take for potheads to realize that the trash can really isn’t that far away?
