Country singer Jason Aldean’s “Try That In A Small Town,” which was pulled off the Country Music Television network airwaves this week, has caught the attention of The View, on which the hosts criticized the song over multiple points, including its criticism of big cities.
Joy Behar said there is “no reason” to separate big-city people from small-town people, which, to her, was “the divisive part of this song.” Though Behar said she defends Aldean’s right to make his music video and spoke out against censoring him, she added that the singer needed to understand the “big cities are supporting the small towns.”

“Seventy blue counties are responsible for 70% of America’s economy,” Behar said. “The big cities are really providing the things that you have in these small towns. You should not be against big cities.”
Fellow host Sara Haines added that while she understood the distinction between rural communities and big cities, she took issue with one of the lyrics in the song: “See how far ya make it down the road.” Haines said that a singer can “never” say that “without knowing the history of this country.”

Aldean, a conservative, has defended the song in the wake of the pushback it has received online. The music artist stated the song is about the desire to return to a time “where we go at least a day without a headline that keeps us up at night.”
“Try That In A Small Town, for me, refers to the feeling of a community that I had growing up, where we took care of our neighbors, regardless of differences of background or belief,” Aldean tweeted. “Because they were our neighbors, and that was above any differences.”

Aldean also said the footage used in the music video for the song did not contain any actual news footage of riots, nor does it mention race at all. However, The View host Sunny Hostin stated that while she tries to respect other people’s interpretation, Aldean’s song “goes too far.” Host Whoopi Goldberg agreed, telling Aldean, “You’ve gone too far.”

CMT, a television network dedicated to country music videos, removed “Try That In A Small Town” from its rotation on Monday. Since then, the country singer has received support from multiple conservatives, including Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD), 2024 presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and Donald Trump Jr.
In the wake of CMT pulling “Try That In A Small Town,” the song has made its way to the top of the iTunes Top 100 in the United States. Additionally, the song made it into the Top 10 on Amazon’s “Hot New Releases” list and No. 2 for YouTube’s trending music videos.
