Hillary Clinton to host karaoke night for progressives in NYC

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will take the karaoke stage in October to raise money for two political action committees looking to mobilize voters in the midterm elections.

Onward Together and Latino Victory Project are scheduled to host the “Raise Your Voice for Democracy” event in New York City on October, which will be hosted by Clinton, composer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, and actor Paul Rudd.

Clinton promoted the event on social media on Thursday, hinting that she may not be the best vocalist.

“I promise that you don’t want to hear me sing at this karaoke night,” she said. “But some friends will—including @Lin_Manuel, Paul Rudd, and special guests.”

The event could attract quite a buzz, but not because of Clinton’s attendance. Miranda is a Broadway giant, known for Hamilton and the music in Disney’s Moana, and has stepped into the political sphere several times.

The son of a New York Democratic consultant, Miranda worked with the Latino Victory Project to launch the Miranda Family Rising Stars Fund last year, which is intended to raise money for Latino candidates.

Rudd, on the other hand, has kept a lower profile in the political sphere, though he has lent his stardom to certain civic action initiatives. In 2024, he handed out water to young voters waiting to cast their ballots in Philadelphia.

The event marks Clinton’s return to political fundraising, as she hasn’t participated in many political events since April, when she was the keynote speaker at the McIntyre-Shaheen Dinner in Nashua, New Hampshire. As for the midterm elections, she has largely taken a back seat, compared to Vice President Kamala Harris, who has been endorsing candidates.

As progressive and socialist candidates have notched primary wins nationwide, Clinton has called for unity in the Democratic Party. She previously appeared on the Pivot podcast and warned that the GOP’s messaging about left-of-center Democrats could be effective.

“The Republican messaging is communist, socialist,” Clinton told hosts Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway. “It’s going to be a very effective attack.”

Notably, the PACs behind the event have not endorsed socialist candidates in New York and neighboring New Jersey. Onward Together has endorsed Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Josh Riley (D-NY), and Pat Ryan (D-NY) for reelection. Latino Victory Project has endorsed downballot in New York for state legislators.
