Matt Gaetz announces he’s returning to public service

Former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz announced he is returning to public service, serving on the Triumph Gulf Coast Inc. board of directors.

“I am returning to public service! Thank you, Speaker Perez, for this appointment. I look forward to the work ahead as we continue improving the lives of Northwest Floridians,” Gaetz said on X Tuesday.

The seven-member Board of Triumph Gulf Coast Inc., is appointed by Florida’s top elected officials. The governor, attorney general, and chief financial officer each appoint one member, while the president of the state Senate and speaker of the House each appoint two. Board appointments and term lengths are governed by Florida law.

Triumph Gulf Coast Inc. oversees the distribution of most of Florida’s Deepwater Horizon settlement funds, directing investments to support economic recovery and growth in eight Northwest Florida counties affected by a 2010 oil spill.

“It is my pleasure to appoint you to serve as a member of the Triumph Golf Coast, Inc. Board of Directors,” Perez said in the letter.

Perez indicated that Gaetz will start on July 1 and will serve in the position until June 30, 2030.

Gaetz resigned after then-President-elect Donald Trump tapped him to serve as attorney general in 2024.

His resignation came days before the House ethics committee would vote to release a report about Gaetz, investigating allegations that Gaetz had sexual relations with an underage girl while serving in Congress.

The report was voted on and released in December 2024, despite Gaetz’s efforts to sue the committee. The report detailed the sexual misconduct allegations.

After Gaetz resigned, he was no longer considered a member of Congress and was a private citizen.
