Disney’s Strange World fell far below expectations during its opening weekend.

The film premiered in theaters on Nov. 23, earning just $18.6 million over the five-day Thanksgiving release and only $11.9 million over the weekend.

The film also came up short at the international box office, with $9.2 million in earnings from 43 markets for a worldwide start of $27.8 million.

“This is a weak opening by Disney animation standards,” movie consultant David A. Gross told Variety. “At a cost of $180 million, plus marketing expenses, the film will finish in the red, even with good ancillary income.”

Disney is expected to lose at least $100 million in Strange World’s theatrical run after the film cost $180 million to produce, on top of the additional tens of millions spent on marketing and distribution.

The dismal box office showing is being suggested as “one of the worst opening weekends of modern times.”
