Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley suggested there has “always been a streak” within the Democratic Party in denigrating voters, with President Joe Biden’s recent “garbage” comment being the latest one.
Biden’s statement was made during a live stream on Tuesday evening, during which he contended “the only garbage” he could see are supporters of former President Donald Trump. While many Republicans have condemned the president’s remark, Whatley suggested the remark is par for the course for some Democrats, citing how 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton once deemed Trump supporters a “basket of deplorables” or how Harris running mate Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) compared Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally to a 1939 Nazi rally held in the same area.

“So it is continuously denigrating half the country,” Whatley said on Fox News’s Fox and Friends First. “The other thing that I think is really important is that Donald Trump came down the escalator nine years ago, said that he was going to make America great again by restoring our southern border, rebuilding our economy, and ensuring that we, as a country, are strong enough to protect our interest and our allies all around the world. That is what he did during his four years, that is what he is focusing on right now, is lifting up every American family through a stronger economy, rebuilding the border, and ensuring that we’re going to be strong enough to protect our interest.”
On the flip side, Whatley contended that Vice President Kamala Harris’s closing argument to voters is “you are horrible people, please vote for me.” The Democratic presidential candidate’s lack of a compelling closing argument, Whatley argued, is because she is unable to discuss her record on the economy, the southern border, or any other issue facing voters and is instead resorting to “name calling and finger pointing.”
There are only five days left before the 2024 presidential election, with Whatley arguing that Trump and his campaign is at the strongest it has ever been throughout the last eight years. He contended that while Trump is either tied or in a small lead in current polling data, it contrasts to how Trump was behind by up to 8 percentage points in his previous presidential runs.
“So Donald Trump is in a fantastic position to win on Election Day; we’re in a stronger position than we were four years ago or eight years ago,” Whatley said.

Following Biden’s “garbage” remark, the former president opted to don an orange vest and drive a garbage truck with a “Trump 2024” ad wrapped to the truck’s side. Trump told the press that both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s 2024 presidential opponent, should be “ashamed” of Biden’s remark.
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), Trump’s running mate, suggested during a recent town hall that Biden’s remark was an attempt at “silencing” Harris’s critics, as both Harris and Biden believe voters are “not good enough to voice concern.” Vivek Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate and Trump ally, has deemed Biden’s remark “a welcome October surprise” as the wheels on the Harris campaign are “spiraling” off.
