Pro-Russian hacker group targets US hospital websites

A group of pro-Russian hackers targeted the websites of hospitals in the United States to retaliate against the country’s support for Ukraine.
Killnet, a Russian hacker group, called for its members to overwhelm more than a dozen hospital websites in the U.S. with distributed denial-of-service attacks, a form of digital attack that overwhelms web servers through excess traffic to its IP address. These attacks have temporarily taken down the websites of several hospitals, including Duke University, the University of Michigan Health, and Stanford Health Care.

The University of Michigan Health confirmed to the Washington Examiner that it is “experiencing intermittent problems with its public websites.” It said it is working with its web host to mitigate the issue.
The attacks are part of a more extensive series of DDoS attacks organized by Killnet and targeting hospitals in Germany and the Netherlands. “It’s very simple,” one of the hacker group’s leaders wrote in a Telegram channel. “We are tearing down the medical facilities in these countries to support the Nazis in Ukraine.”

Killnet has regularly retaliated against the U.S. for its support of Ukraine in its war with Russia. The group has taken down more than 14 U.S. airport websites, Congress’s online portal, and the Vatican website in the last year.
