After DeSantis’s historic win in Florida, Trump touts winning more votes in 2020

After Ron DeSantis’s historic win in the Florida governor’s race, former President Donald Trump knocked the Republican incumbent for garnering fewer votes than he did during the 2020 election.
DeSantis defeated Democratic challenger Charlie Crist by nearly 20 percentage points, garnering 4.6 million votes, compared to Crist’s 3.1 million. Comparatively, Trump won Florida with 5.6 million votes, edging out President Joe Biden by 3.3 percentage points.

“Now that the Election in Florida is over, and everything went quite well, shouldn’t it be said that in 2020, I got 1.1 Million more votes in Florida than Ron D got this year, 5.7 Million to 4.6 Million? Just asking?” Trump said in a Truth Social post.
Trump’s comments are the former president’s latest attacks on DeSantis, who is considered a potential contender for the 2024 presidential election and Trump’s top challenger should they compete for the GOP nomination. DeSantis has not indicated whether he plans to launch a White House bid.
Meanwhile, Trump is expected to announce a third presidential run, teasing a “very big announcement” at his Mar-a-Lago home on Tuesday. Trump has since gone on the offensive against DeSantis, even going so far as to say it would be a “mistake” and not “good for the party” if the Florida governor ran.

Polling suggests DeSantis could have a leg up on Trump as Republican voters are increasingly warming up to the Florida governor over the former president. About 72% of Republican voters say DeSantis should have a great deal or good amount of influence over the party’s direction, compared to 64% who said the same about Trump, according to an ABC News-Ipsos poll released in October.
