PETA is mobilizing a truck in Texas that will display images and play recordings of chickens cramped together, as they would be in midtransport to various chicken restaurants.
“Local diners just might think twice about chowing down on fried chicken after they see — and hear — ‘Hell on Wheels,’ PETA’s new guerilla-marketing campaign,” a press release from the animal rights nonprofit group read.
The truck will feature the real sounds of squawking chickens, with intermittent calls to veganism. It will visit Cowboy Chicken, Wing Bucket, Mike’s Chicken, Dave’s Hot Chicken, and Street’s Fine Chicken.
The circuit will continue in Fort Worth, running by Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken, the Cookshack, Charleston’s Restaurant, Lisa’s Chicken & Seafood, and Good Luck Drive-In, starting Thursday and running until Sunday.

“Behind every barbecued wing or bucket of fried chicken is a once-living, sensitive individual who was crammed onto a truck for a terrifying, miserable journey to their death,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said. “PETA’s ‘Hell on Wheels’ truck is an appeal to anyone who eats chicken to remember that the meat industry is cruel to birds and that the kindest meal is a vegan one.”

This campaign comes in light of a nationwide chicken shortage that has resulted in increased prices for both poultry and eggs. PETA published a subsequent blog post listing all of the reasons the shortage has been good for chickens.
