Damar Hamlin discharged from Buffalo hospital after bevy of health tests

Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin was discharged from a Buffalo hospital Wednesday after being transferred to the hospital from Cincinnati earlier this week for additional treatment.
Hamlin, 24, underwent various cardiac, neurological, and vascular testing to complement the treatment he received after he collapsed from cardiac arrest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals last week, the Bills announced.

“Hamlin was admitted on Monday and went through a comprehensive medical evaluation as well as a series of cardiac, neurological, and vascular testing on Tuesday,” the Bills explained in a statement.

On Jan. 2, Hamlin collapsed on the field after standing up from a tackle against a Bengals player, prompting officials to halt and then ultimately end the game. Personnel managed to restart his heart on the field, and he was later transferred to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Hamlin was initially in critical condition, but he managed to recover functionality and communicate with visitors via writing three days after his collapse. His first question was, “Did we win?” according to medical officials presiding over the case. The Bills announced his transfer to Kaleida Health in Buffalo on Monday.
“We have completed a series of tests and evaluations, and in consultation with the team physicians, we are confident that Damar can be safely discharged to continue his rehabilitation at home and with the Bills,” Dr. Jamie Nader, who led the team treating Hamlin at Kaleida Health, added in a statement about his discharge from the facility.
Medical personnel has been apprehensive about discussing Hamlin’s future career in the NFL. He had been a safety for the Bills.
“He is doing well, and this is the beginning of the next stage of his recovery,” Dr. William A. Knight previously explained, according to CNN. “It is entirely too premature to discuss, not only his football — it’s that we’re really focused on his day-to-day recovery.”

During the Bills game against the Patriots on Sunday, Hamlin chimed in on Twitter, cheering on his team, which ultimately won 35 to 23. The exact cause of his cardiac event remains murky.
Hamlin is in his second NFL season.
