The head coach of the University of Mississippi’s football team is accusing a Texas Tech player of spitting on at least one player and using a racial slur during Wednesday’s TaxAct Texas Bowl.

The alleged incident took place during a fourth-quarter confrontation between the teams, according to a report. The confrontation came after a Mississippi fumble.

Ole Miss Head Coach Lane Kiffin was adamant that a personal foul was incorrectly given to one of his players, Ole Miss wideout Jordan Watkins.

“They announce our 11, which is Jordan Watkins, who wasn’t in the fight, it was their 11 that was fighting 71, [Ole Miss lineman Jayden Williams] and everybody knew because their own coaches were yelling at the guy,” Kiffin said.

“There was a racial slur involved, that’s not the point of what we’re talking about, [it is] about the spitting part. I brought our own 71 up to the officials, right or wrong, you see him crying? He’s not crying because he got spit on, it’s because something was said.”

Both players involved in the altercation are black.

Kiffin didn’t say whether he believed the slur was directed at a specific player, and he said he did not specifically hear it.

“I was told that that was said in that [incident] but I did not hear that. So that would obviously be a giant issue.”

Kiffin spoke with Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire about the incident after the game.
