NYC Council immigration chairwoman calls on Adams to welcome illegal immigrants

New York City Councilwoman Shahana Hanif called on Mayor Eric Adams to give the illegal immigrants flooding the city more resources and expand “right to shelter” policies.

“From a very young age, I saw myself as a fighter, and that’s what led me to the City Council,” Hanif, chairwoman of the council’s committee on immigration and co-chairwoman of its progressive caucus, told both the press and onlookers outside a Midtown Manhattan church.

Fighters need to “continue the legacy of a city that continues to be a place where refugees will migrate to,” the equity-driven councilwoman said.

New York City was established as a place where refugees can seek safety and a new future, according to Hanif.

“Right now, as folks escape slavery, conscription, political turmoil, economic and social injustices, we have to be a city that says this is an opportunity for us to expand right to shelter,” she said.

“This is an opportunity for us to see our schools as an opportunity to recruit and retain bilingual educators, bilingual guidance counselors and social workers, and librarians.”

It is up to leaders like Adams to secure and continue the city’s “legacy,” Hanif said.

“Mayor Adams, you, you can and have the time to eliminate these cruel, inhumane, unjust directives now.”

Adams has repeatedly asked the Biden administration for help in dealing with the immigrants and has accused the president of ‘abandoning’ sanctuary cities in need.

“We had to do a real job of explaining to everyday New Yorkers that the federal government has abandoned this important issue that’s a national issue,” Adams said in a December interview.
