The war between Israel and Hamas has caused quite a bit of controversy in the country as part of the fallout from Hamas’s brutal and barbaric attack on Israel on Oct. 7.
The division mostly comes from the vocal groups that inexplicably have refused to condemn the actions of Hamas and instead tried to shift the narrative from the hundreds of innocent Israelis who were brutally murdered into a conversation about the plight of Palestinians. Nevertheless, despite these radical attempts at Hamas revisionism, most of the country still views Hamas as a terrorist group.

According to a recent poll conducted by Rasmussen, “78% of Likely U.S. Voters believe Hamas should be considered a terrorist organization.” Given the horrific assaults the group committed earlier this month, including attacking innocent women and children in Israel and the alleged monstrous, brutal crimes against infants and toddlers, it makes sense that such a high percentage of voters think of Hamas as a terrorist organization instead of the so-called “freedom fighters” that many protesters and agenda-driven pundits have claimed. Conversely, only 8% of voters disagree with such a classification for Hamas.
Moreover, Hamas’s atrocities led Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, to send a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken to issue “a clear and unambiguous declaration that Hamas has committed acts of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes against the Jewish people and the State of Israel.”
“On October 7th, 2023, Hamas committed acts of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes against the Jewish people and the State of Israel,” McCaul wrote. “Hamas’ actions were not just acts of ‘terrorism’ or ‘terrorist attacks.’ Rather, the assault was carried out by a genocidal organization and comprised nothing less than the full range of atrocity crimes under international law. I write to request that the Department of State and the Office of Global Criminal Justice – working in coordination with the Office of the Legal Advisor – consider a formal determination of the same.”

Considering the atrocities mentioned above, the only surprise to this poll might be that the percentage of voters who believe that Hamas is a terrorist organization wasn’t higher than 78%. Anytime innocent toddlers are murdered or concertgoers at a music festival who had nothing to do with any of the hostilities in the region are attacked and kidnapped, people tend to view the aggressors negatively.
Hamas is an abomination, and Congress should follow McCaul’s lead in denouncing the genocidal organization. Moreover, all people should recognize the evil that it is.
