The brutal attack by Hamas on Israel earlier this month has put a renewed focus on relations between the U.S. and Israel. Many were appalled and outraged at the brutal killings of innocent Israelis and have questioned the nation’s commitment to its Middle East ally.

President Joe Biden has been under a microscope since the attack, with many wondering what, if anything, he will do in response. It also has made voters question Biden’s effect on the relationship between the two countries, and the results aren’t a good sign for the 46th president.

According to a recent poll by Rasmussen, only 17% of voters think the relationship between Israel and the United States has improved since Joe Biden became president. Additionally, the poll found that “43% of likely U.S. voters believe America’s relations with Israel” have worsened since his inauguration in January 2021. Interestingly, 29% of voters felt that “relations were about the same,” while 11% were not entirely sure, Rasmussen reported.

As the survey comes on the heels of one of the most devastating attacks on Israel in its history, “pro-Israel sentiment” has increased within the nation. Rasmussen also revealed that 63% of respondents believe that “Israel is a U.S. ally.” This marks a 12% increase from July, in which only 51% of voters felt that way. Conversely, only 7% deem Israel “an enemy,” and 20% believe the country is “somewhere in between,” according to Rasmussen. Another 10% of respondents were unsure whether to categorize Israel as friend or foe.

Biden visited Israel earlier this week after the poll was conducted. It would be interesting to see if this would have changed the results in any way. However, Biden’s relative apathy toward Israel before the invasion was the impetus for why so few voters think he has improved relations. It remains to be seen what impact, if any, this will have on Biden’s reelection chances as the 2024 presidential election is over a year away. However, the fact that so few people believe he improved relations could be an ominous sign of his reelection chances.
