Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) announced on Thursday that he is traveling to Israel to meet with war victims as the conflict in the Middle East continues to intensify.

“I’m on my way to Israel,” Newsom said in a post to X, formerly known as Twitter. “I’ll be meeting with those impacted by the horrific terrorist attacks and offering California‘s support.”

Newsom has offered similar statements of support for the Jewish state after Hamas, a Palestinian group deemed a terrorist organization by the U.S., launched an attack on Israel on Oct. 7. Israel declared war against Hamas shortly after.

Before the Al-Alhi Hospital deaths on Tuesday, Israeli strikes on Gaza had killed at least 2,778 people and wounded 9,700, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, the Associated Press reported. More than 1,400 Israelis have been killed, most of whom were civilians slain in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack.

“What we are witnessing is nothing short of horrific. Women, children — innocent people — being targeted with brutal acts of terrorism by Hamas. All on the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War,” Newsom said on Oct. 7. “There is simply no justification for this. I stand with Israel and its people in denouncing this horrific act of terrorism. We must demand an end to this violence — now.”

The California governor will stop in Israel on his way to a planned trip to China next week that will begin in Hong Kong. California will send medical aid and other supplies to the region, including Gaza.

“The Governor adjusted his planned international trip and will briefly visit Israel ahead of going to China,” spokeswoman Erin Mellon said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “While in Israel, the Governor will meet with those impacted by the violence.”

Newsom is not the only Democratic official making trips to Israel. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) is in Israel on Thursday meeting with victims of the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) led a bipartisan delegation to Tel Aviv, later having to shelter in a bunker during heavy rocket fire. Joining Schumer in Israel were Sens. Mitt Romney (R-UT), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), and Mark Kelly (D-AZ).
