The laughable trainwreck of the House GOP’s speakership woes can be almost entirely attributed to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), and serves as a good reminder Gaetz is nothing more than a regular loser for the GOP.

Gaetz used a petty feud as an excuse to join with 208 Democrats and seven other self-loathing Republicans to eject then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his role. There was no plan in place, no preferred candidate Gaetz wanted. He simply decided to help Democrats neuter the GOP House Majority in exchange for a personal victory and some fundraising emails.

SALT DEDUCTION BACK IN FOCUS AS NEW YORK REPUBLICANS FLEX MUSCLES IN SPEAKER DEBATE

This ultimately led to Gaetz’s buddy Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) being the caucus’s nominee for speaker, but he has fallen short twice. As it turns out, a good chunk of Republicans don’t want to reward Gaetz for tanking McCarthy or Gaetz allies for voting down backup option Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), both of whom had the support of the vast majority of the caucus to be speaker.

And it appears that Gaetz has even played an active role in inadvertently tanking Jordan, as McCarthy says many members are upset with Gaetz continuing to send out fundraising emails that claim “RINO’s are working with RADICAL DEMOCRATS like AOC, ILHAN OMAR and RASHIDA TLAIB to BLOCK JIM JORDAN from becoming SPEAKER!!”

Then again, maybe those GOP members of Congress would be less upset if Gaetz hadn’t worked with radical Democrats to block a Republican from being speaker when he got McCarthy booted from the job, the exact thing he is accusing them of. Again, Gaetz (and just seven other Republicans) joined with 208 Democrats to oust McCarthy over the objection of 210 Republicans, more Republicans than support Jordan or any other member of the caucus for the role.

So, here is the question: what does Matt Gaetz actually add to the Republican Party? Has he passed any legislation of significance? Of course not. Politically, he is damaging Jordan and likely will damage any speaker candidate he supports. He is easily replaceable, given that a ham sandwich could win an election in his district if it ran as a Republican.

What has Matt Gaetz actually won as a member of Congress other than more camera time for himself?

Squish Republicans who roll over for Democrats at every turn, and Gaetz are two sides of the same coin. Those “RINOs” help Republicans lose by refusing to take up the fight, especially on cultural issues. Gaetz, meanwhile, only fights against Republicans, sabotaging the party so he can declare himself the purest of conservatives and secure more camera time. In reality, Gaetz poisons everything he touches, and that is what he has done to the House GOP.
