House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) asked Monday for the special counsel investigating President Joe Biden’s classified documents case to hand over details about the documents to determine if they were relevant to the Biden family’s businesses.
Comer wrote in a letter obtained by the Washington Examiner to special counsel Robert Hur asking that the committee be given access to review the documents with classified markings uncovered at Biden’s office and home locations.

Comer also asked for a list of any countries and names on the documents.
“If any of the classified documents mishandled by President Biden involved countries or individuals that had financial dealings with Biden family members or their related companies, the committee needs access to that information to evaluate whether our national security has been compromised,” he wrote.
Comer cited business ventures, primarily involving Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden, in China, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Romania. Hunter Biden and his affiliated companies have raked in millions through these ventures, which Comer has documented in a timeline through his committee’s acquisition of bank records and other reports.
Comer’s request comes after the Department of Justice appointed Hur in January to conduct an investigation into documents with classified markings that were uncovered in the Penn Biden Center and the president’s Delaware home, including in his garage.
The FBI conducted searches of both locations in November 2022 and January 2023, respectively, in coordination with Joe Biden’s legal team. The documents found were related to Joe Biden’s time as vice president and senator.
Biden’s attorneys initially found the documents on November 2, days before the midterm elections, and alerted the National Archives. However, the president has drawn scrutiny for failing to publicly reveal that information until after it was first reported by CBS nearly two months later.
Hur recently interviewed Joe Biden as part of the case, but the status of the investigation remains unknown. Hur will be required to release a publicly available report about his work once it has concluded.
Comer, in his letter to Hur, also asked about the scope of the interview with Biden to determine whether questions about the DOJ’s investigation into Hunter Biden were off limits.

“President Biden’s retention of certain classified documents begs the question as to why he kept these particular materials,” Comer wrote. “Of the many classified documents he reviewed over his lengthy career, why did President Biden keep these specific documents in his home and office?”
The Washington Examiner has reached out to the DOJ for comment.
