Food Stamps Cuts

Cuts to the nation’s food stamp program enacted earlier this year are only affecting four states, far from the sweeping reform that Republicans had pushed, according to an Associated Press review. As a result, it’s unclear if the law will realize the estimated $8.6 billion in savings over 10 years that the GOP had touted. (AP Photo/David Goldman, File) David Goldman

In New Mexico, the maximum SNAP payments are $281 for a household of one, $939 for a household of four, and $1,691 for a household of eight. For additional household members, $211 is added.

SNAP benefit recipients will see the amount transferred to a prepaid electronic benefit transfer card. The EBT card works similarly to a debit card and can be used at grocery stores and farmer’s markets or at some online retailers. The money is intended for purchasing healthy foods.
