A police officer in Long Island is being lauded after they used a cruiser to sideswipe a woman Tuesday while she waved a gun in the street.

The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. Nassau County police received a call that an armed individual had forced traffic to a dead stop at a busy intersection, according to a report.

“It’s a loaded gun that she’s waving around in the traffic, pointing at people that have got their children and their families in their cars,” Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said.

Police said the woman fired her gun at least one time in the air before holding the weapon to her head, the report noted.

Before any further harm could occur, a Nassau police vehicle struck the 33-year-old woman, sideswiping her and forcing her to the ground.

She lost possession of the firearm, was tackled by police, and taken into custody.

The officer who struck the woman is a “hero,” according to Ryder.

“Other option on the table is to take out the gun and shoot her. They didn’t do that,” Ryder said. “They chose an alternative option that they thought quickly to react and probably saved people’s lives, including their own, from any further injuries.”

Ellen Zainfeld, a witness to the incident, echoed Ryder’s sentiment.

“I thought it was brilliant that the guy knocked her down to at least get her under control,” Zainfeld said.

“It was a great move.”
