After former President Donald Trump’s latest indictment, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis tweeted his displeasure with the “weaponization of government” and the “politicization of the rule of law.”

It was bold, truthful, honest, and the kind of statement by DeSantis that all Republicans used to love about him.

“As President, I will end the weaponization of government, replace the FBI Director, and ensure a single standard of justice for all Americans. While I’ve seen reports, I have not read the indictment. I do, though, believe we need to enact reforms so that Americans have the right to remove cases from Washington, DC, to their home districts,” DeSantis tweeted. “Washington, DC is a “swamp” and it is unfair to have to stand trial before a jury that is reflective of the swamp mentality. One of the reasons our country is in decline is the politicization of the rule of law. No more excuses—I will end the weaponization of the federal government.”

Yet, even though it’s the very kind of statement people said they wanted from DeSantis earlier this year, it still wasn’t enough for many Trump supporters on social media. Essentially, DeSantis is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t.

For example, Donald Trump Jr. tweeted, “Pay attention to which Republicans spoke out against this corrupt BS immediately and who sat on their hands and waited to see which way the wind was blowing.”

Radio host Stew Peters suggested that DeSantis send the Florida National Guard to Mar-a-Lago for security purposes, Business Insider reported. If DeSantis failed to do this, it somehow made him a fraud, according to Peters. This was the same guy who also called for Trump supporters to build a “patriot moat” around Trump’s residence to prevent him from being arrested.

It’s one thing to question the motives of the country’s justice system in indicting Donald Trump but seemingly ignoring illegal behavior by Democrats. It’s another entirely to suggest people leave their jobs and families and build a moat around Mar-a-Lago.

Right-wing political commentator Michael Cernovich also tweeted about a strange, weird necessity for DeSantis to tweet against Trump’s indictment in March.

“DeSantis is making his first unforced error by not denouncing this lawless act. He should say he will only extradite if there’s proper legal review,” Cernovich tweeted. “This is one of those pivotal moments in your life. If he gets this wrong, then he’s better off not even declaring.”

Conversely, DeSantis did what many asked of him this time, but it still wasn’t good enough for the social media trolls.

Again, Mike Cernovich took issue with DeSantis. It wasn’t passionate enough for his liking. He called DeSantis’ tweet “soulless legalese” and demanded DeSantis take a “f****** stand and have some passion.”

Brandon Straka, another aspiring right-wing social media influencer, trolled DeSantis with a statement ranting incoherently about “January 6 defendants” and stating that DeSantis should be helping them – something that is legally not possible.

“Your state has more J6 defendants than any other,” Straka tweeted. “They have been targeted by this DOJ exactly the same as Donald Trump or any other high profile Republican. They needed help. None of them have heard from you or any other elected official in Florida.”

Many Trump supporters feel the former president is being politically persecuted. I would argue there is an element of truth to this. I wholeheartedly believe none of these indictments would be happening if Trump was a Democrat — or any other Republican besides Donald Trump. And the fact that Democrats repeatedly skirt the law without any consequences should make people angry. There’s definitely something off here, and it should be investigated.

However, DeSantis has repeatedly stated his opposition to a weaponized government and announced the changes he would make if elected president. That should be enough for everyone.

Any criticisms about his statements not being timely or strong enough are illogical tirades predicated on emotional outrage by people who cannot process their anger.

Short of chaining himself to Mar-a-Lago and shouting, “You’ll never take Donald Trump alive,” nothing DeSantis says or does will ever be good enough for Trump-supporting detractors. However, that says more about the people opposing him than DeSantis.
