You should not be paying Trump’s legal bills

Former President Donald Trump’s political action committee, Save America, is nearly broke after starting the year with $105 million on hand, the New York Times reported on Monday. The PAC has requested an unprecedented refund of $60 million from donations made to a pro-Trump super PAC.

“The super PAC, which is called Make America Great Again Inc., has already sent back $12.25 million to the group paying Mr. Trump’s legal bills, according to federal records — a sum nearly as large as the $13.1 million the super PAC raised from donors in the first half of 2023,” the report said. “Those donations included $1 million from the father of his son-in-law, Charles Kushner, whom Mr. Trump pardoned for federal crimes in his final days as president, and $100,000 from a candidate seeking Mr. Trump’s endorsement.”

DON’T MOVE BACKWARD ON FREE SPEECH

So-called super PACs can field donations of any amount from corporations and unions and spend endlessly since they are not officially connected to a campaign, while PAC money typically comes from small-dollar donations. Save America PAC has spent over $40 million on the former president’s personal legal bills. Why exactly would everyday working-class donors be paying for the legal bills of a man reportedly worth $2.5 billion?

The lion’s share of Republican voters and donors view the growing list of Trump’s indictments as nothing more than a targeted hit from the same Department of Justice that is more than happy to look the other way on any number of the Biden family’s alleged crimes. Still, when voters donate to a candidate, they do so to assist that candidate in defeating his or her political opponent, and President Joe Biden has given Republicans a litany of reasons to donate to their GOP candidates of choice.

Along with the astronomical legal bills paid by Save America PAC, Make America Great Again Inc. spent $23 million on attack ads against Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) earlier this year. DeSantis did not cause sky-high inflation or flirt with nuclear war with Russia, and a billionaire should be able to pay his own lawyers.

If Trump is the Republican nominee, he will be going up against an incredibly well-funded Biden with a legacy media dedicated to dragging what is left of the then 81-year-old president over the finish line. Even if you look past the depravity of one of the world’s most powerful and successful men using his supporters’ money to pay his lawyers, if Trumpworld’s recent spending is predictive, they would be in for a rough general election.
