Conservatives are responding more forcefully on sex ed because the Left is pushing crazier stuff

Some commentators, reporters, and activists seem to sincerely believe that conservatives are making some sort of culture war offensive against gay and transgender people or their ideology.
Everywhere you look, you see stories about rising tides of “anti-lgbtq laws” or rising anti-LGBT sentiment.

If cultural conservatives are reacting more forcefully to the cultural Left, it’s because the cultural Left is pushing more harmful stuff and more ruthlessly wielding its power to push it.
The public schools in Montgomery County, Maryland, are introducing more and more material that advances a particular morality and very new view of humanity. This includes the idea that every person has an innate gender which is totally disconnected from one’s biology, and that this innate gender — knowable only by the individual — determines whether that person is a man or a woman.
For instance, the school district is requiring fifth graders to read Born Ready: The True Story of a Boy Named Penelope. The central premise of this book is that you need not be born a boy to be a boy, but you can become a boy.
Transgender ideology is built upon a religious conviction: The premises here are not provable or falsifiable, they are simply a belief about the soul, and a belief rejected by nearly every culture in human history.
As a Muslim group in Montgomery County puts it, the school district “recently introduced a new curriculum to indoctrinate students from pre k-eighth grade on a specific and highly opinionated view of sexual morality and gender ideology. The curriculum lesson plans attempt to eliminate dissent by correcting/silencing students with differing opinions, whether based on religion or science.”
The Muslim group has joined with social conservatives seeking to allow parents who reject this religious belief to opt out.
Muslims’ beliefs in the gender binary and that marriage is between a man and a woman are not new. This county’s sex and gender curriculum is new.
If you wonder why parents are increasing their objections to gay and transgender curricula, it’s because the gay and transgender curricula are becoming more common and more doctrinaire.
While schools are preaching this doctrine that points children toward transitioning into the opposite gender, teachers, school districts, and state governments are adopting a policy of keeping such transitions away from parents. Then throw in the laws that will strip parents of custody if they don’t accept a child’s “transition.”

All of this is new. Not a single liberal in 2013 said that public schools should teach fifth grade girls that they might be boys, keep it secret from parents if the girl starts to claim she’s a boy, and then that the state should take the girl away from her parents if they don’t treat her as a boy.
The Left is on a fearsome culture war offensive. Some on the Right are fighting back. Nobody should be surprised.
