Today, Oct. 12, is Columbus Day — and only Columbus Day.
It is a holiday set aside to honor the accomplishments and legacy of Christopher Columbus, the 15th-century Italian explorer from the Republic of Genoa. His 1492 expedition to the Western Hemisphere led to the discovery of previously unknown landmasses. When Columbus landed on San Salvador (an island in what is now the Bahamas), he began the Age of Exploration and altered the course of world history.
It is unquestionably one of the most important moments in the history of human civilization, and it is a crowning achievement that President Donald Trump has ensured will never be tarnished or forgotten as long as he is president. The president deserves widespread recognition for his defense of Columbus, for no other president has done more to preserve the explorer’s legacy than Trump.
“Christopher Columbus changed the future of humanity forever,” Trump said at the White House on Friday in a special ceremony honoring the explorer.
While history shows he was not the first to discover land in the Western Hemisphere, he was the first to bring awareness of its existence. This revelation, as Trump said, “changed the future of humanity.” Columbus’s expeditions led to the development of a new world on what would ultimately become the American continents. Trump noted in his proclamation honoring Columbus Day that it was Columbus’s voyage that “redrew the map of human possibility and opened a new chapter in the history of exploration.
“They unleashed a bold new age of discovery that expanded the horizons of knowledge, carried the splendors of the Western world across an ocean, and set in motion the forces that would culminate in the miracle of July 4, 1776,” read Trump’s proclamation.
And during the ceremony, Trump reaffirmed that Columbus would always be recognized for his accomplishments: “In this administration, we know that Christopher Columbus is to us, he’s a hero.”
It was an important statement and a pivotal moment for multiple reasons, one of which the president may or may not have been aware of. Trump’s praise of Columbus echoed another famous historical moment, albeit of the pop-culture variety, from the famous HBO television series The Sopranos.
In an episode from the show’s fourth season, in 2002, fictional mob boss Tony Soprano, the patriarch of the Soprano family and the show’s main character, is dealing with a problem that plagues schools today and is at the root of many of the attacks on Columbus: a history teacher indoctrinating students with negative assessments of Western civilization’s important historical figures. The protagonist’s son is shown reading A People’s History of the United States, written by socialist, radical left-wing historian Howard Zinn — the architect of much of the revisionist disdain toward the nation’s historical figures.
“Like it took guts to murder people and put them in chains,” said A.J. Soprano, Tony’s son.
“He was a victim of his time,” argued Carmela Soprano, Tony’s wife and A.J.’s mother.
“Who cares, it’s what he did,” replied A.J.
“He discovered America is what he did,” a frustrated Tony yelled back. “He was a brave Italian explorer.”
“And in this house, Christopher Columbus is a hero,” Tony Soprano added.
The scene has become an internet meme during this time of year. And while I doubt the scriptwriter planned it in 2002, the scene has risen in popularity on social media since then, and it does highlight an important issue regarding the country’s education system. Teachers vilify the nation’s heroes of yesteryear and brainwash students into thinking all of Western civilization is an act of predatory and exploitative evil.
It’s a trend that Trump has worked hard to reverse, including through efforts to preserve the legacy of Christopher Columbus. And no other president has done more to rehabilitate Columbus’s image than Trump, especially during this year’s semiquincentennial. Trump deserves a significant amount of credit for doing so — credit that has been largely ignored by liberals, Democrats, socialists, communists, and their accomplices in the legacy media.
Many have forgotten, but Columbus’s voyage was one of the first historical moments highlighted in the light show on the Washington Monument as the clock struck midnight on Jan. 1, 2026. In the first minutes of the light show on the Washington Monument, the first chapter of our nation’s history was depicted with video of three ships representing the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria from Columbus’s expedition.
“Our nation began not as an idea invented in the minds of men, but as land discovered,” began the narration of the light show. “When Christopher Columbus looked west across the endless ocean, he sailed for glory, for gain, and for God. Three ships traveled into the unknown, daring to go where no man had gone before. What they discovered changed the course of history.”
Does anyone truly believe Columbus would have been referenced in the opening minutes of Jan. 1, 2026, if Joe Biden were president? If Kamala Harris were president? If any Democrat or, sadly, any other Republican were president? Of course not.
Trump also helped restore Columbus’s legacy by cleaning and refurbishing the Columbus Memorial at Union Station in Washington, D.C. Left to deteriorate into a wasteland of dirt, filth, and graffiti by previous presidential administrations, the monument was restored to pristine condition and today looks as good as new. It is another example of Trump’s dedication to preserving Columbus. Moreover, it is something no other president before him had even considered.
During the chaos and destruction of the George Floyd riots and looting, Baltimore’s Columbus statue was attacked, destroyed, and dumped into Baltimore Harbor on July 4, 2020. Recovery efforts found that the statue had been broken into 12 pieces and was unsalvageable. The Knights of Columbus retrieved the broken monument and vowed to recreate it and make three new replicas. Trump said one of the replicas would be placed in the White House, and in March 2026, he made good on his word by displaying a new replica of the destroyed statue at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
During Friday’s ceremony, Trump said that he “resurrected” Columbus. He is absolutely right. He had the determination and fortitude to do what was necessary and right and to help restore Columbus’s place in history to its former glory. He dared to do what other presidents would have been too afraid to do.
It is just the latest example of why this country needed Trump as president. And it is these types of actions by Trump that patriotic Americans should never forget.
