An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer was struck by a fleeing vehicle in New Jersey while trying to apprehend a suspect, who remains at-large.

The incident occurred on Route 72 in the township of Manahawkin, New Jersey, according to the Stafford Township Police Department. The report said the incident occurred Monday morning, after a suspect fled from law enforcement, hitting one officer with a vehicle. In response, the officer fired at the car.

Law enforcement did not provide details about the operation or the suspect.

It’s unclear the extent of the officer’s injuries, though photos show him on the ground, and then being carried onto a stretcher by other officers and emergency workers.

The police report said the department is not involved in the ICE operation, following the Immigrant Trust Directive, a statewide policy that prevents law enforcement officers from assisting federal immigration authorities in an effort to increase trust between local law enforcement and minority communities.

“Our role at this point is to manage traffic and secure the crime scene,” the release reads.

The release urged locals to avoid the area during the investigation, which is estimated to last several hours.
