Audio has resurfaced of attorney and former Rep. Liz Cheney saying that Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) had her full support in his bid to be the House Republican Conference chairman. The two haven’t always agreed on political strategy or rhetoric, but they are united on one issue: their desire to see President Donald Trump impeached.
“I think it’s important for us to have people in leadership who are willing to defend the Constitution,” the Wyoming Republican said of supporting Roy over Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) for Republican Conference chair in 2021. Stefanik was elected chairwoman, a position she held until January 2025.
Cheney has continuously expressed her position in the fight against Trump, making it clear that he should be on the sidelines.

“I think that Chip and I were in different places on impeachment, obviously, but Chip was in the right place when it came to counting the electoral votes,” Cheney said. “From my perspective, this is about a much bigger issue. I don’t believe that we ought to be embracing Donald Trump as the leader of the party. I think that he has forfeited his right to participate in that role.”
Cheney first endorsed Roy in his run for conference chairman, and according to a January 2021 post to his campaign page, he fought to keep her in her role as chairwoman of the Republican conference when Republicans wanted her out: “Liz should be commended, not condemned, for standing up in defense of the Constitution and standing true to her beliefs.” The statement followed the two reaching different conclusions on an impeachment vote following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
