Southwest Airlines launches ‘Independence One’ plane for America 250 celebrations

Southwest Airlines on Monday unveiled an aircraft designed to honor the United States’s 250th anniversary

The airline’s announcement is part of a nationwide effort to mark the country’s semiquincentennial throughout 2026. Many of the initiatives are being led by America250, a congressionally created organization with which Southwest Airlines announced a partnership this week, and Freedom 250, spearheaded by President Donald Trump

The “Independence One” plane will take off on its first scheduled flight on April 29, bound for Philadelphia, “the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.” The aircraft features a patriotic red, white, and blue paint scheme with 1776 written in giant quill script.

“Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” is emblazoned on the plane’s side, referencing the famous phrase from the Declaration of Independence. Thirteen stars on the fuselage mark the 13 original colonies created when the country first broke away from Great Britain and declared its independence from colonial rule.

“We honor this important milestone in our nation’s history, and the generations of Customers that Southwest has carried. They join our Freedom One aircraft in uniting families, bringing service members home, flying entrepreneurs chasing an opportunity, and helping communities stay connected,” Southwest CEO Bob Jordan said in a statement.

“Southwest is proud to be a part of the 250th national celebration and to honor the same spirit of innovation, resilience, and optimism that has shaped our country and our Company,” the company’s CEO continued.

Southwest Airlines on Monday announced it is partnering with America250 as the official airline of the organization’s sweeping volunteerism initiative, dubbed “America Gives.” The airline said it will invest up to $250,000 to make 2026 the largest year of volunteerism in U.S. history.

Several railway giants are also celebrating the country’s 250th anniversary of independence through their operations, branding multiple locomotives with America 250 memorabilia. The locomotives from Canadian Pacific, Kansas City, and Canadian National are crisscrossing the country throughout the year.
