California Democrats will spend millions to ‘study’ inevitable mileage tax

.

Nothing could more perfectly represent the incompetence and wastefulness of California Democrats than spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a study to justify imposing even higher taxes on the state’s residents.

California has the highest gas tax in the nation, which has become a problem given that Democrats in the state plan to force everyone to buy electric vehicles. Therefore, they have had to scheme up other ways to leech money from drivers in the future, and they have their new plan: charge every driver for every mile they drive.

But this is California, and proposing a tax is not as simple as it should be. Instead, California Democrats in the state Assembly have passed a bill that would create a study to analyze this new tax. That study will give Democrats a road map on how to implement the tax, meaning it is the first step into taxing drivers for every mile they travel.

In true California fashion, this study will cost taxpayers anywhere from hundreds of thousands to low millions of dollars. Yes, before California figures out how to jack up taxes on its residents (again), it will have to spend seven figures to “study” the tax increase. That kind of wastefulness shows precisely why California has to keep coming up with new taxes to make up for revenue gaps caused by irresponsible (and, typically, completely pointless) spending.

Everyone knows how this ends. It ends with California imposing the new tax because California Democrats cannot and will not pass up an opportunity to increase taxes to justify their bloated state budget. The study is nothing more than a table setting, an attempt by Democrats to dress up a new tax as being necessary because science said so. They have already set about destroying the gas tax by forcing people to buy EVs and running oil refineries out of business. This is the logical next step for a governing party that sees its residents as piggy banks after it has undermined one of its own excessive taxes.

No, the mileage tax is not literally on the table right now, but California Democrats are preparing to put it there. They will twist and squirm under the backlash (as they are right now), but they will point to their million-dollar study as justification for imposing it. In a year or two, California drivers will be taxed for every mile they drive, so that California Democrats can light that money on fire as part of a constantly ballooning budget they refuse to try to balance.
