The Washington Examiner‘s Byron York said Monday that a recent nickname given to President Donald Trump should be thrown “out the window” thanks to the many trade deals the president has achieved.
On Sunday, Trump announced a new trade deal with the European Union, including a 15% tariff on most imported goods. This came less than a week after Trump unveiled a 15% “reciprocal” tariff on Japan on Tuesday, which will also feature the country investing $550 billion in the United States.
York said it is “unlikely” most skeptics of Trump’s tariffs will admit they were wrong. He cited how Trump’s critics referred to him as “TACO,” an acronym for “Trump Always Chickens Out,” in their predictions that Trump would back off with his tariff threats.
“And they were saying, ‘Well, Trump will never get these deals, these trade deals, because he always chickens out. He threatens to impose a tariff, and then the other side says no, and then Trump chickens out,’” York said Monday on Fox News’s America Reports.
“Well, now he’s got all these big deals, and they appear to be very good for the United States. And so that talking point is out the window,” York said.
York also said Trump’s deal with the EU is the biggest deal the president has reached “so far.” York said the biggest deal Trump could achieve is with China.
TRUMP CONTINUES TO RAGE AGAINST WIND TURBINES: ‘THEY’RE KILLING US’
York predicted the Trump administration would tout the tariff deals by discussing how they would generate more money for the Treasury. However, he said the “bigger issue” with these tariffs is getting the U.S. to “make more things,” listing semiconductors, medical equipment, and medicine as examples.
Comedian Bill Maher is among Trump’s critics who admitted they were wrong, with Maher saying, “The stock market is at record highs.”
