Scientific American editor-in-chief gets biology wrong for both humans and birds

What happens when an outlet that claims to care about science attempts to reinforce the scientific illiteracy of the transgender movement? Everyone involved makes a fool of themselves, as Scientific American has repeatedly shown.
Scientific American says it “is committed to sharing trustworthy knowledge, enhancing our understanding of the world, and advancing social justice” despite the latter commitment being in direct conflict with the former two. In the spirit of that mission, Editor-in-Chief Laura Helmuth decided to share an article from the Audubon Society about white-throated sparrows, claiming it proved “sex is not binary” because “white-throated sparrows have four chromosomally distinct sexes.”
WHAT THE GOP WORK REQUIREMENT PROPOSAL WOULD REALLY DO
Scientific American has repeatedly tried to push transgender activist talking points as real science because Scientific American has become nothing more than a liberal advocacy group wearing the carcass of a scientific magazine as a skinsuit. Helmuth’s assertions here are the latest example of this, but there are a couple of problems with her example.
The biggest problem with this assertion is that it is not true. While white-throated sparrows do have four different chromosome combinations, they only have two types of gametes (sex cells): sperm cells and egg cells. The article even makes this clear, describing the four types as “super-aggressive males, more nurturing males, somewhat aggressive females, and super-nurturing females.” There are two sets of males and two sets of females, not four unique sexes. It is still binary.
Of course, the other problem this argument has, aside from being wrong, is quite clear. Believe it or not, humans are not white-throated sparrows. Even if it were true that one species of birds had four different sexes (which, again, is not the case here), that would mean nothing. Humans are also not the various forms of fish or slugs that can naturally change their sexes because those animals do not need to get sex change surgeries to alter their bodies. The science around humans is very clear: Sex is binary, and it is not something that can be changed with hormones and surgeries.

Scientific American forfeited its right to claim it is an impartial journal of science, not least of which because it decided to give an endorsement in the 2020 presidential election. The outlet makes a mockery of science under the direction of Helmuth to please left-wing activists, and all of its work should be viewed through that scope.
