Olympic figure skater and gold medalist Sarah Hughes has filed with the Federal Election Commission to run for New York’s 4th Congressional District against an incumbent Republican in a blue district.

Hughes has not yet announced her campaign, but a spokesman for her said that “she is putting the pieces into place to make an announcement in the next few weeks.”

“Born and raised on Long Island, Sarah is concerned about where we’re headed, whether it’s rising prices, public safety and gun violence, or threats to women’s health,” Max Kramer, a spokesman for Hughes, said.

The seat is now held by freshman Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY), a former detective of the New York Police Department. D’Esposito won the seat, which went for President Joe Biden by 15 percentage points in 2020, after former Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-NY) retired. D’Esposito defeated his Democratic opponent by 4 points in 2022.

Hughes brings a significant amount of name ID to the race, which is something that will greatly benefit Democrats as they try to reclaim a seat that had historically been theirs. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has named D’Esposito as a target in the 2024 election as the party believes it can flip the seat back to blue. Before D’Esposito won last cycle, a Republican hadn’t held the seat since 1997.

In 2002, Hughes won the Olympic gold medal in figure skating in what has been dubbed one of the greatest upsets in the history of the sport.
