Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav defended what he called a “new CNN” and its decision to host former President Donald Trump for a May 10 town hall-style Q&A.

“The U.S. has a divided government. We need to hear both voices,” Zaslav told the CNBC Squawk Box crew Friday. “Republicans are on the air on CNN, Democrats are on the air … When we do politics, we need to represent both sides. I think it’s important for America.”

Trump is the front-runner for the 2024 GOP nomination and “should be” hosted by major networks such as CNN, according to Zaslav, who alluded to the notion that MSNBC and Fox News are “advocacy networks.”

“We got a great political season coming … This is a new CNN,” Zaslav said. “He’s the front-runner. He has to be on our network. We’re happy that he’s coming on.”

When asked if this “new CNN” could be as profitable as it used to be, Zaslav stood firm.

“You build a great brand, and in … time you’re gonna have a lot more value,” he said. “We get it right. We take it around the world, and we will be stronger.”

“Let’s get the message right. Let’s get the brand right. Let’s get the balance right, and the rest of it will come.”
