A House Judiciary subcommittee is holding a hearing on Thursday to examine the FBI’s use of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, one of several recent hearings as part of a larger GOP investigation into federal agencies and departments in the Biden administration.
The Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance will take a look at the “FBI’s abuses of its Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) authorities, discuss the FBI’s failures to implement meaningful reforms to prevent its abuses, and address the broad issue of warrantless mass surveillance on American citizens.”

The hearing is titled, “Fixing FISA: How a Law Designed to Protect Americans Has Been Weaponized Against Them.” The committee is expected to hear from Justice Department Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz; Sharon Bradford Franklin, chair of the U.S. Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board; and Beth A. Williams, board member of the U.S. Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board as witnesses.
The subcommittee’s hearing comes as the overall committee continues to look at immigration and the “weaponization” of the Justice Department, an agenda that House Republicans vowed to fulfill after securing a majority in the lower chamber in 2022.
