“Once again, our nation is in mourning after a senseless act of gun violence,” Biden said to open his statement.

The president offered prayers from him and first lady Jill Biden for the victims and their families in his statement. He thanked the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department officers for their fast response to the Monday morning in Louisville’s Old National Bank and bemoaned the state of gun violence in the country.
“How many more Americans must die before Republicans in Congress will act to protect our communities? It’s long past time that we require safe storage of firearms,” Joe Biden said. “Require background checks for all gun sales. Eliminate gun manufacturers’ immunity from liability. We can and must do these things now.”
The president called out motions in Florida and North Carolina. He said Republicans are backing “dangerous bills that make our schools, places of worship, and communities less safe.”

He alluded to the recently signed law that allows Florida residents to carry concealed guns without a permit. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed the law on Monday, April 3. It followed a law spearheaded by North Carolina’s GOP-led legislature. That law eliminated the need for a permit from a local sheriff to buy a handgun.
“It’s unconscionable, it’s reckless, and too many Americans are paying with their lives,” the president said.
