Former President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden said Friday in a wide-ranging interview about the family that his father’s prostate cancer has recently spread further and “it’s not good.”
“The cancer has spread, it’s metastasized into his bones and further,” Hunter said in an interview with BBC’s Paddy O’Connell. “It’s very painful, um, and it’s very debilitating in many respects. But he’s still out there, he’s still doing his thing, he so believes in this country, and as long as he’s alive, I promise you he’s going to continue to fight.”
The former president revealed his Stage 4 prostate cancer diagnosis in a statement in May 2025, not long after he left the White House. The cancer was described as “aggressive” in the original diagnosis and received a Gleason score of 9, reflecting a high likelihood the cancer cells were abnormal and carrying a high risk of spreading throughout the body.
“It’s really tough, Paddy, that’s the real answer,” Hunter said when asked about his father’s health. “My dad is to this day and remains the center of our family, not just because of who he is, as the public person, but completely because of who he is to each one of us, down to his grandchildren and his great-grandchild… he is our rock.”
The former president has largely stayed out of public view since leaving office, but recently delivered the keynote address at a Maryland Democratic Party gala and attended the opening of former President Barack Obama’s presidential library in Chicago. Biden is releasing a book about his presidency titled Promise Me, America, in mid-November. His wife, Jill Biden, released a book on the same topic titled View from the East Wing in early June.

“He has been there for each one of us in a way that is hard for me to even possibly articulate and explain,” Hunter also said. “And whatever you think about his politics or the decisions that he made, I can tell you this: He’s the best father, the best husband, the best grandfather, of anyone that I’ve ever read about, heard about, or even seen in a movie. So it’s really hard, Patty, and it’s really sad to watch.”
Hunter also said in the interview his father’s decision to backtrack on a promise not to pardon him was bad for both the country and his father’s legacy. “It’s something that is easily criticized and for good reason,” he said. “And I can’t pretend otherwise.”
