An “older male citizen armed with a handgun” reportedly shot and killed a suspected car thief after being rammed and landed onto the hood of the car in a Target and Michael’s shopping center parking lot in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

“The initial information indicates a white male was burglarizing vehicles in the parking lot near Michael’s. An older male citizen, armed with a handgun, witnessed the criminal activity and confronted the suspected burglar,” Coeur d’Alene Police Department said on social media.

The man confronted the burglary suspect in the vehicle, and then the thief “started accelerating” the vehicle at the man.

“The citizen ended up on the hood of the suspect’s vehicle and fired several times at the suspect, hitting him while the suspect was accelerating. The suspect was hit at least once. The suspect’s vehicle crashed into a parked vehicle, throwing the citizen off the hood,” the police said.

Erin Riley, a witness, told a local news outlet that she heard a lot of “commotion” and then what sounded like “fireworks.” She said she turned to her car and ducked.

Police officers found the suspected thief out of the vehicle and on the ground. Officers immediately began giving medical aid to the citizen and the suspected burglar.

Both the suspect and the older man were sent to the hospital, but the suspect did not survive.
