Greta Thunberg is facing backlash for deleting a 2018 tweet on the fate of humanity and climate change.

The tweet in question featured a link and quote from an article warning that humanity would meet its end if fossil fuel use did not cease by 2023.

“‘A top climate scientist is warning that climate change will wipe out all of humanity unless we stop using fossil fuels over the next five years,'” her tweet read.

The tweet is no longer on Twitter, but pictures of the post with a time stamp have circulated. The Associated Press confirmed that Thunberg did indeed delete the tweet.

The article she had linked to also no longer exists, but it was archived and copies exist.

Its headline read “Top Climate Scientist: Humans Will Go Extinct if We Don’t Fix Climate Change by 2023.”

It is unclear why Thunberg deleted the post and she has not addressed it.

The Associated Press fact-checked several reports on the tweet’s deletion, claiming they are “missing context.”

As it explains, neither the scientist paraphrased in the article nor Thunberg herself claimed that humanity would end by 2023.

Harvard University professor of atmospheric chemistry James Anderson, who is paraphrased in the article, claimed in 2018 that recovery from climate change will be impossible if drastic action isn’t taken by 2023.

Thunberg then quoted the article and its embellished lead paragraph, claiming that humanity would be “wiped out” if fossil fuels weren’t stopped by 2023.

Anderson told the Associated Press that the article’s paraphrase “is a complete fabrication of what I said.”

“The ‘wiping out of humanity by 2022’ is a total distortion of what I said or meant at the University of Chicago colloquium in 2018. I would never make such a statement,” he added.

It is unclear what Thunberg’s understanding of the claim’s validity was or whether she believed humanity would be “wiped out.”
