Big cities run by Democrats for decades are now supposedly ‘ungovernable’

Establishment media cannot admit that decades of Democratic governance have led to the decay of major American cities. Instead, they must pretend that big cities are simply ungovernable by nature.
That is the assertion made by David Graham in the Atlantic’s daily newsletter. It comes in response to Lori Lightfoot, the Democratic mayor of Chicago, being resoundingly rejected by voters during her reelection campaign. Crime, which has spiraled out of control in the Windy City with Lightfoot at the helm, is simply something mayors have no control over. Poor Lori Lightfoot, who “may” have been “held to a higher standard” because she is a woman. There is simply nothing she can do!
ANOTHER POLICE OFFICER HAS BEEN KILLED BY A CRIMINAL WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN LOCKED UP
Lightfoot is not alone on the list of poor helpless mayors who are watching crime become worse. Graham also names New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney. Los Angeles and Atlanta also get mentions. It is apparently out of the question to expect the mayors of these cities to treat crime as a serious issue.
Lightfoot is not a victim. She supported the soft-on-crime policies that were being applied by prosecutors in Chicago, as has Kenney in Philadelphia. Compare that to San Francisco, where Mayor London Breed backed the recall of a useless soft-on-crime district attorney and then recently announced the city would be refocusing on fighting crime instead of enabling it. She recently replaced the city’s woke district attorney, Chesa Boudin, with a tougher prosecutor. Breed also backed the recall of woke school board members.
To expect other Democrats to do the same is apparently too much, though.
What do the five cities Graham names have in common outside of being big cities? Los Angeles has been run by Democrats since 2001. Philadelphia has been run by Democrats since 1952. Chicago has been run by Democrats since 1931. Atlanta and New Orleans have been run by Democrats since the 70s — as in the 1870s.
If you peruse the list of America’s deadliest cities, you will find that they have been run by Democrats for decades. Big cities are so ungovernable that Republican Rudy Giuliani took office in New York City in 1993, when the city was recording 2,000 murders a year, and cut that number to just 600 by the time reelection rolled around. We have seen what it looks like when mayors focus on crime. We haven’t seen much of it in these Democratic havens lately, though.
These cities have tried everything, from electing a Democratic mayor to electing another Democratic mayor, and nothing ever seems to work. What can they possibly do? It must simply be because big cities are “ungovernable.” Because Democrats can never fail, they can only be failed, even in cities they have run since before World War II.
