Guitar smashed by Kurt Cobain expected to fetch up to $400,000 at auction

A guitar smashed by the late music legend Kurt Cobain is expected to fetch up to $400,000 as it hits the auction block this weekend.
The guitar is set to headline Julien’s Auctions’ annual “Icons & Idols: Rock ‘N’ Roll” auction in New York City.

It is a 1973 Fender Mustang, which Cobain played twice in 1989. In the second performance in Wilkinsburg, PA, Cobain smashed it during Nirvana’s performance of “Blew.”
Considered by many as an iconic piece of grunge history, the instrument has an estimated worth of $200,000 to $400,000.
“Kurt just … enjoyed breaking guitars,” Martin Nolan, the executive director of Julien’s Auctions, said. “He loved that showmanship. That was part of his shtick when he was on stage performing. He got great joy from doing that. This guitar was the guitar that he broke that particular night in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania.”

“It’s just one of the incredible items we have at the Hard Rock Cafe this week,” he added.
Other items featured in the auction include glasses worn by John Lennon, a beehive topper belonging to Amy Winehouse, and a grand piano played by Bob Dylan.
