Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) claimed Monday that the reason she was booted from her post on the House Foreign Affairs Committee was “bigotry.”

Omar said bigotry from Republican leaders such as former President Donald Trump and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) got her ousted from the committee.

“It precisely has to do with bigotry,” Omar told MSNBC guest host Mehdi Hasan. “These are people who certainly don’t believe Muslim immigrants, Somali immigrants, refugees, and certainly someone who carries all those identities together, should be in the United States, let alone in Congress and wield any kind of power.”

Omar was removed in a 218-211 vote along party lines last week over previous antisemitic comments.

Democrats had removed Greene and other Republicans from their committees over their own hateful remarks, giving Republicans precedent.

A resolution sponsored by Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) listed a number of Omar’s antisemitic remarks. It argued that the Minnesota congresswoman disqualified herself from serving on the Foreign Affairs Committee. Omar has publicly apologized for her comments.

Omar said she hopes President Joe Biden will address anti-Muslim bigotry during his State of the Union address Tuesday night. She said she had not heard him comment on the matter. The president has, however, condemned hate speech and antisemitic remarks.

“I haven’t heard the president been asked or address any of this and would love to hear the president of the United States speak about the rise and the continuation of anti-Muslim bigotry, the demonization of black immigrants, the demonization of black people in this country,” Omar said.

“We are humans. We matter. We are part and parcel of American society,” she added. “Our lives should be valued and our opinions should be valued as every other American.”

The president is not expected to comment on Omar’s removal from her post or the removal of Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Eric Swalwell (D-CA) from their committee assignments on the House Intelligence Committee during the speech.
