Actress Sally Field told The View on Tuesday that “this country’s being challenged by things that are frightening to me.”

According to her, the arts need to provide “a reminder” to America.

“You know, people loving each other — how can that be a bad thing? It’s not. Just to see what love looks like when it may not be what you’re used to, without even preaching about it,” she explained.

Responding to a case being argued before the Supreme Court, 303 Creative v. Elenis, that addresses whether a web designer must perform her services for same-sex nuptials, Whoopi Goldberg said, “We’ve been through this, and the outcome of this is people saying, ‘I don’t want to serve you because you’re black. I don’t want to serve you because you’re gay. I don’t want to serve you because you’re a woman.'”

“Whose rights are we protecting?” she added.

Joy Behar recalled Field’s last appearance on the show for her memoir, in which she “wrote about a harrowing experience that you had. At age 17, you had to go to Tijuana to get a secret abortion before Roe v. Wade.” With that in mind, Behar prompted the actress for her response to the recent overturn of Roe.

Field told her, “I think it’s tragic. I think it’s criminal. I think it’s cruel. I think it’s uncivilized.” She further claimed that the Supreme Court is not considering “the ramifications,” particularly for young women, hungry children, and unwanted children.

“We have nothing to help those children once they’re born. Then what?” she asked.

“They drop you like a hot potato once you’re born,” Behar agreed.
