WATCH LIVE: Bidens host arts and humanities award ceremony

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden are hosting an award ceremony to present the 2021 National Humanities Medals and 2021 National Medal of Arts at the White House.

Recipients of the arts awards include actress Mindy Kaling, comedic actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, designer Vera Wang, and singer Bruce Springsteen, among others. Author Amy Tan, poet Richard Blanco, historian Earl Lewis, and others are set to receive the humanities awards.

The arts awards are the highest award given to artists, arts patrons, and groups to honor “exemplary individuals and organizations that have advanced the arts in America and offered inspiration to others through their distinguished achievement, support, or patronage.”

Humanities awards are presented to people whose works deepen “the nation’s understanding of the humanities and broadened our citizens’ engagement with history, literature, languages, philosophy, and other humanities subjects.”

Biden awarded a National Humanities Medal to Elton John in September 2022.

The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
