Zelensky praises strike on Russian air defense as ‘significant achievement’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his nightly address on Thursday that the destruction of the Russian air defense system in Crimea is a “significant” accomplishment.
“I thank you for today’s triumph, the destruction of the occupiers’ air defense system on the land of our Crimea. It is a very significant achievement. Well done!” Zelensky said.

Late on Wednesday and into Thursday morning, Ukrainian forces attacked the Russian air defense system near the town of Yevpatoriya in Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.
This move is part of a larger offensive on the Crimean Peninsula, including an “irreparable loss” of two ships in the Russian Black Sea fleet from Ukrainian airstrikes. This has been the most aggressive Ukrainian offensive since the war began.

President Joe Biden is planning on meeting with Zelensky around the time of the U.N. General Assembly meeting next week, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un also arrived on Thursday in the Russian city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur. It is speculated that Russian President Vladimir Putin may be in talks with Kim about armaments for the war effort.
