Jim Antle, the magazine’s executive editor, brings to life the pages of the Washington Examiner magazine in the show Inside Scoop. Each episode features exclusive insight from the article authors and expert analysis.
This week, Antle breaks down the anger, lack of leadership, and unpopularity plaguing the Democratic Party. Three things happened in rapid succession in one 24-hour period that illustrate the promise and the peril that lie ahead for Democrats: a 50-point special election victory, the reemergence of former Vice President Kamala Harris and 2024 recriminations, and the senseless murder of the influential conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Daniel Ross Goodman, a Washington Examiner contributor, joined Antle to discuss his piece on the media’s handling of two significant stories: the murder of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska in Charlotte, NC, and the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Goodman highlighted the media’s initial neglect of Zarutska’s murder.
“This murder of a Ukrainian refugee was not covered hardly at all by outlets like the New York Times, CNN,” Goodman said. “It was only thanks to conservative figures like Charlie Kirk, in a tragic twist of irony, who had brought it to our attention.”
Goodman also noted the media’s initial biased coverage of Kirk’s death, which later required retractions. He suggested that the combination of these events might prompt conversations of media accountability and a reevaluation of their approach to covering certain stories and figures.
“I think the combination of the death of Iryna Zarutska and Charlie Kirk and how they died is a turning point in American history, not only in how we approach violence, but how it’s covered, and in how some of the people who bring these topics to the forefront of the media are covered,” Goodman said. “I think we’re finally beginning to see some people and in those areas of the media say, ‘Well, maybe we’ve been doing something a little bit wrong. Maybe we need to correct our ways a little bit and how we approach these stories and these figures.’”
