Trump says GOP will ‘always support’ IVF following controversial Alabama ruling

Former President Donald Trump expressed support for in vitro fertilization on Truth Social on Friday following a controversial Alabama Supreme Court decision that ruled frozen embryos were considered children under the state’s law.

Trump, who is expected to face off against President Joe Biden for a 2020 rematch in November, took to the social media platform to clarify his support of IVF.

“We want to make it easier for mothers and fathers to have babies, not harder! That includes supporting the availability of fertility treatments like IVF in every State in America. Like the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of Americans, including the VAST MAJORITY of Republicans, Conservatives, Christians, and Pro-Life Americans, I strongly support the availability of IVF for couples who are trying to have a precious baby,” the former president wrote.

He further called for the Alabama legislature to work on an “immediate solution” to protect IVF. “The Republican Party should always be on the side of the Miracle of Life – and the side of Mothers, Fathers, and their Beautiful Babies. IVF is an important part of that, and our Great Republican Party will always be with you, in your quest, for the ULTIMATE JOY IN LIFE,” he said.

The Alabama decision saw near-immediate repercussions, with a hospital in the state moving to stop its IVF services after. Abortion-rights activists and Democratic politicians also quickly sounded the alarm over the decision, warning Republicans would come after the fertility procedure.

Some Republicans, including those running campaigns in pivotal battleground states and districts, denounced Alabama’s move, reiterating their support for the popular fertility method. Even the National Republican Senatorial Committee released a memo Friday in response to the ruling, telling their 2024 slate of candidates to “clearly and concisely reject efforts by the government to restrict IVF.”

At the American Conservative Union’s 2024 Conservative Political Action Conference, Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt recalled, “President Trump has said that he is proud to be the most pro-life president in American history. It was because of his conservative Supreme Court justices that Roe v. Wade was overturned [and] these issues were returned back to the states.”

Now, she said, “the president and the majority of Americans want to see IVF treatments available for young American families.” In fact, it should be made easier “for people to have children,” she added.

Amid the decision’s backlash, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said he doesn’t intend to use the latest decision from the state’s high court to prosecute families using IVF to have children.
