In less than a week, the chance for millions of people to receive an existing form of relief worth up to thousands of dollars will be gone.

The deadline for individual filers with little or no income to complete a simplified tax return to see if they qualify for unclaimed COVID-19 stimulus payments or child tax credits is on Nov. 15. As many as 9 million or 10 million people who have not yet received these payments, which may be worth a combined total of up to $3,200, may be eligible, according to the Government Accountability Office.

Those who made less than $75,000 per year or joint filers who made less than $150,000 per year were eligible for the three stimulus checks of varying amounts. Those who do not file taxes because of how little income they earn have until Nov. 15 to fill out a simplified tax return form to see whether they are eligible for any of the relief payments.

Additionally, families with children are eligible for the child tax credit, which aims to reduce financial hardship and food insecurity. About 84% of children nationwide benefited from those credits between July and December 2021.

Congress approved three waves of a total of $931 billion worth of stimulus checks as part of relief for the coronavirus pandemic for nearly 165 million people in 2020 and 2021. Two of the stimulus check payments were signed into law by then-President Donald Trump in 2020, and the final COVID-19 stimulus bill was signed into law by President Joe Biden in March 2021.
