Progressives don’t want to address the threat of China because of racism

Progressive Democrats are once again asking that you please do not criticize the Chinese Communist Party in any way because condemning a genocidal regime is actually racist.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), a lesser-known member of “the Squad,” was among the Democrats who voted against establishing a select committee that will examine many of the challenges coming from China, from national security threats to China’s role in spreading COVID-19 to the world. The committee has bipartisan support, with 146 Democrats joining 219 Republicans to vote in favor of it.

“I voted no because, again, it’s another sham effort here,” Pressley said. “It’s really clear that this is just a committee that would further embolden anti-Asian rhetoric and hate and put lives at risk.” The Democrat from Massachusetts said that “we have enough infrastructure and governance to tackle those issues” without the committee.
Given that “infrastructure and governance” have done nothing to stop American businesses from becoming beholden to China, prevent China from opening up secret police stations in the United States to harass Chinese dissidents, stop China from infecting higher education with propaganda programs, or keep Chinese spyware off of American technology, we will just have to agree to disagree.
Just as alarming, though, is the continued racialization of addressing the threats posed by the CCP. The Democratic Party’s toxic racial obsession is bad enough when it comes to domestic issues, but it plays directly into Chinese propaganda when it is applied to foreign policy. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) said in 2021 that putting any blame on the Chinese government for lying about COVID-19 and spreading the pandemic across the world was directly responsible for anti-Asian violence.
It is not a standard that applies to, say, Pressley’s criticisms of Israel and antisemitic violence. But China, run by an expansionist, genocidal regime, is off-limits. China is the world’s biggest human rights abuser, a threat to global peace and stability, and an open opponent of the very ideas of freedom and equality, and yet the very idea of addressing this will inspire people to punch Asian Americans in the street … or something.
Pressley’s racist worldview assumes the worst of her fellow Americans, but on this topic, it also serves the interest of the Chinese Communist Party. Were we to follow her lead, the U.S. would back down from every threat and adhere to every demand that the CCP makes. Chinese President Xi Jinping couldn’t ask for anything more.
