As a borderline biblical storm battered Orange County, the district’s congresswoman had her eye on the prize: announcing her Senate campaign for the 2024 election. Cringe-inducing optics aside, there’s just one potentially insurmountable problem for Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), namely that Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) hasn’t actually announced forgoing reelection.

Sure, Feinstein may be 91 come Election Day, and even liberal-leaning media, such as New York magazine, have pointed out that the Democrat’s cognitive decline can no longer be ignored. But recall that Feinstein refused to step back even after her office most likely leaked Christine Blasey Ford’s infamous letter, turning the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Justice Brett Kavanaugh into a national circus.

BIDEN HAS NO LEGAL OR SCIENTIFIC CASE TO STEAL YOUR GAS STOVE

Even if Feinstein does retire, the most indigo state in the union has a vast and diverse backbench. Eager to replace the abysmal Health and Human Services secretary, President Joe Biden may urge Xavier Becerra to run, and Vice President Kamala Harris loyalist Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) would surely have a formidable bid. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) has made a national name for himself as a heterodox, progressive capitalist, and Mayor London Breed could be ready to graduate from the disaster that is San Francisco.

So what does Porter have going for her? She likely will not have the backing of the vice president, who, with her national profile and California connections, could wind up the kingmaker of the race, and Californians tend to favor Bay Area politicians over those in SoCal. Furthermore, recent allegations that Porter iced out a veteran from her office for the sin of maybe giving her COVID may be the tip of the iceberg, telegraphing more bad boss stories to come.
