Democrats did not run on Biden’s agenda

It is still too early to know just how badly President Joe Biden and the Democrats were rebuked by voters today, but Democrats are already out spinning the press on why the loss isn’t as bad as past defeats.
“Usually the president’s party gets absolutely destroyed,” an unnamed Biden campaign alumnus told Politico this morning. “It’s usually catastrophic. Often they are avoiding the president’s agenda. If you look at what the Democrats are running on, it’s the president’s agenda. They’re all embracing it.”
Is this true, though? Are Democrats running on Biden’s agenda?
Only if you consider abortion part of Biden’s game plan.
Democrats have spent $320 million on ads on abortion, $140 million on crime, and just $31 million on inflation. Of those, only inflation, through the Inflation Reduction Act, can really be thought of as part of Biden’s agenda.
Meanwhile, when it comes to Biden’s immigration agenda, Democrats couldn’t run away from Biden fast enough.
Four Democratic senators up for reelection this cycle — Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), and Raphael Warnock (D-GA) — all signed a letter sent to Biden this August asking him to reverse his plan to end using Title 42 authorities to turn away migrants caught illegally crossing the border.
“When Democrats are wrong, like on the border, I call them out on it,” Kelly later said in his debate with Republican candidate Blake Masters. “I’ve spent a lot of time on our southern border, and let me just say it’s a mess. It’s chaos. It’s crisis after crisis.”
Asked specifically what Biden has done wrong on the border, Kelly said, “When the president decided he was going to do something dumb on this, and change the rules, that would create a bigger crisis — I told him he was wrong. So I pushed back on this administration multiple times.”
Fellow border Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) has been equally critical of Biden’s border policies. “If you don’t deport people, they will see the border as a speed bump,” Cuellar told Fox News. “We have to deport people. We have to deport people who aren’t supposed to be here.”
The vast majority of the people agree with Cuellar and have rejected Biden’s immigration agenda. According to a Harvard poll taken last November, asked specifically if “people who cross the border with Mexico illegally should be turned back to Mexico” (as was President Donald Trump’s policy) or “released into the US with a court date” (which is Biden’s policy), 71% of voters chose the Trump policy.
We’ll see how many of those Democrats that distanced themselves from Biden’s immigration policies survive their elections. Maybe they didn’t distance themselves from Biden on immigration enough.
